FNPA Screening Tool

The Family and Nutrition and Physical Activity (FNPA) screening tool is a behaviorally based assessment designed to allow parents to evaluate obesogenic environments and practices that may predispose youth to becoming overweight. The tool was developed by a research team in the Physical Activity and Health Promotion Lab at Iowa State University. It has been shown to have good internal consistency and utility for predicting children's risk for becoming overweight. It has been deployed in school-based projects and clinical applications. See the Reference page.

FNPA User Group (Join Us!)

There are a number of research groups and pediatric obesity clinics using the FNPA so the purpose of this page is to provide a place for sharing resources, information and outcomes related to the FNPA.  Our goal is to establish a User Group that can provide access to the latest information on the FNPA and a way to share insights and lessons learned.

Clinical Integration - Help us promote adoption of FNPA within EPIC

One of the most promising applications of the FNPA tool is in clinical care - particularly when integrated within standard Well Child Visits (WCV). Dr. Lisa Bailey-Davis has led efforts within Geisinger Health Systems to promote the integration of the FNPA as standard practice within WCVs. We have been working on steps to facilitate the adoption more broadly in other clinical systems. If you are interested in this effort, you can either complete the registration form or email Dr. Bailey-Davis directly. Watch the video to learn more (double click to see it in full screen).

Online Version of the FNPA

An online version of the FNPA tool was developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to facilitate use by clinicians and research groups. The assessment directly links to parenting resources from the Kids Eat Right web page. Visit the Kids Eat Right website to learn more about healthy eating for kids of all ages. Click below to access the online version or to contact the AND about customization.

Since it's original validation, the FNPA has undergone some revisions based on user feedback and cognitive testing. Some of the wording has changed, but the content is still the same!! The ISU research group has recently concluded reliability testing to compare the current FNPA response scale (Almost Never / Sometimes / Usually / Almost Always) to a version with more objective response options for some of the questions and found additional support for the subjective scale.  The updated version of the tool can be found below but you are encouraged to also visit the Resource Page.
